Eshott
Location :7 miles North of Morpeth
OS Ref : NZ 181 983
Eshott was built as a training airfield, opening in late 1942 with three runways in the typical 'A' layout - 08/26 (1,925 x 50 yards), 01/19 (1,200 x 50 yards) and 14/32 (1,025 x 50 yards). A perimeter track linked the runways and included fifty dispersals. Hangarage consisted of eight Blister and 3 T1-Type hangars.
57OTU was the airfields only resident, arriving when the airfield opened and disbanding when the Second World War was over. As a full-size training unit with over 100 aircraft, it was an extremely busy airfield & this resulted in the unit forming a satellite at Boulmer.
At the end of the war the airfield was no longer required and returned for agriculture use, though today a small part of the airfield is still used for private/recreational aviation.
