Holy Island Seaplane Moorings
Location : Off the Southern shore of Holy Island
OS Ref : NU 125 413
It was originally intended for Holy Island to become a Seaplane School in May 1917 to relieve pressure on Calshot, but this duty was taken on by Lee-on-Solent, which had been established as an interim school. A flying boat station was planned next in preference to Seaton Carew II, but the scheme was deferred and then abandoned.
Flying boat moorings for the RAF were in-place during 1918 for aircraft en-route to and from stations in Scotland. In November 1918, Holy Island became a temporary Marine Operation Station in anticipation of a break out by the German High Seas Fleet.
