Newcastle (Town Moor) Aerodrome
Location : North of the Newcastle City Centre
OS Ref : NZ 243 666
Due to lack of space and safety concerns at the Dukes Moor location, Armstrong-Whitworth established a new aerodrome on the northern perimeter of Newcastle's Town Moor. The aerodrome opened in June 1916 when Armstrong Whitworth transferred their flight testing to this larger site. Angus Sanderson who built aircraft under contract from their premises in nearby St. Thomas Street, Newcastle (now part of the University) also flew their aircraft from the Town Moor.
In summer 1917, an Aircraft Acceptance Park was established here to handle A-W F.K.8 and Bristol F.2B's from Armstrong Whitworth and Angus Sanderson as well as Sopwith Cuckoo's from Pegler and Blackburn. The AAP occupied 80 acres of the moor providing a landing area measuring 750 x 750 yards. A 1917 pattern wooden GS shed measuring 170 x 80 feet was erected and was later supplemented by a further three Bessonneau canvas hangars.
After the Armistice, relinquishment of the aerodrome was notified on 22nd January 1920.
