Redcar Aerodrome
Location : Adjacent to Redcar Racecourse
OS Ref : NZ 603 237
Redcar was a 140 acres (930 x 800 yards) aerodrome which opened in July 1915, primarily as a flying school for the RNAS/RAF, but also saw use as a Home Defence Station for RNAS as well as a Marine Operations Station.
Hangarage was provided by two aeroplane sheds (180 x 60 feet) supplemented later by 200 x 100 foot Type F shed. An additional 180 x 160 shed was also added afterwards.
On the night of 8/9 August 1916 a Zeppelin airship bombed the aerodrome, although no one was injured, the electricity supply was severed.
The threat of U-boats off the North East coast saw the arrival of four Handley Page O/100 bombers on detachment from RNAS Coudekerque in September 1917. By the time the detachment had concluded in October, 42 sorties had been flown resulting in 11 U-boats being sighted.
